How does chassis rental work?

Chassis rented per day at $30-50. LALB bundled in quote. Drop & Pick past free period (3-5 days) adds daily chassis rental.

How to avoid demurrage and detention?

Demurrage: port charges $100-350/day past 4-5 day free time. Detention: steamship line charges $100-200/day. Clear customs before arrival, unload same day, return empties immediately.

Can you handle overweight, hazmat, or reefer?

Yes. Overweight needs state permit ($200-500). Hazmat needs endorsed drivers (15-25% surcharge). Reefer needs genset ($150-300/day).

Yes, significantly. LA/Long Beach charges PierPass/TMF ($36-$88 per TEU) and Clean Truck Fee (CTF). Miami has a Landing Fee. Oakland charges a Gate Fee. NY/NJ has Terminal Handling Charges (THC). Every port has a different fee structure — our quotes itemize each charge separately so you know exactly what you're paying.

Live Unload: driver waits while you unload (2 hours free, then $75-$100/hr). Best for small loads you can unload quickly. Drop & Pick: we leave the container, you unload at your pace, we pick up the empty later. Costs ~60% more (extra chassis rental + second dispatch) but ideal for heavy loads or slow unloading. Rule of thumb: 20ft or light cargo = Live. 40ft or 3+ hours to unload = Drop.

Chassis is the wheeled frame the container sits on, rented per day ($30-$50). At LALB, chassis fees are bundled into our quote. Other ports are listed separately. For Drop & Pick, if you exceed the free period (typically 3-5 days), each extra day adds chassis rental. Fast unloading and returning the empty is key to keeping costs down.

This is the #1 cost trap in drayage. Demurrage (charged by the port): container sits in the terminal yard past free time (usually 4-5 days from discharge), $100-$350/day. Detention (charged by the steamship line): container is out of the port past the return deadline (usually 5-7 days), $100-$200/day. To avoid both: file ISF and customs entry before vessel arrival, have your warehouse ready to receive on pickup day, and return empties immediately after unloading.

Yes. Overweight containers (over 44,000 lbs) require a state overweight permit ($200-$500 in CA). Hazmat requires drivers with Hazmat endorsement, rates 15-25% higher. Reefer containers need a genset for power, adding $150-$300/day. Note these requirements when requesting a quote and we'll assign qualified carriers.
